Terms of use
These terms cover your use of CrimePing, a free iPhone app that maps police-reported crime from official city open data. The information comes from government sources, may be wrong or late, and is never a substitute for 911.
The short version
- CrimePing shows information that city governments publish. It may be preliminary, late, incomplete or wrong.
- It is not a substitute for official sources or emergency services. In an emergency, call 911.
- Don’t use what you see in CrimePing to harass, target or confront anyone.
1. Agreement
These terms apply to your use of the CrimePing iPhone app and this website (together, “CrimePing”). By using CrimePing, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, don’t use CrimePing.
2. Where the information comes from
CrimePing displays police reports published by government sources, such as the open-data portals of city police departments. CrimePing doesn’t create these reports and doesn’t control what the sources publish or when.
The information is provided as is. It is often preliminary and may be inaccurate, incomplete, out of date, reclassified or later removed. Locations are approximate, and categories are CrimePing’s grouping of each source’s offense labels. A report is not proof that a crime happened, or that any person or address was involved.
3. Not for emergencies
CrimePing is not a substitute for official sources or for emergency services. It can’t contact police, fire or medical services, and alerts may arrive late or not at all. In an emergency, call 911. For official information, contact the relevant police department or city.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to use CrimePing or its information to:
- harass, threaten, stalk, intimidate or discriminate against any person, household or group;
- take enforcement into your own hands, confront people you suspect, or encourage others to;
- accuse or identify anyone as involved in a crime based on a report’s location or description;
- present the information as official, complete or verified;
- break the law, or interfere with or overload CrimePing or the data sources it uses.
5. No warranty
CrimePing and all information in it are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, completeness, timeliness, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We don’t warrant that CrimePing will be uninterrupted, error-free or available in any particular place.
6. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, CrimePing and the people who make it will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss arising from your use of, or reliance on, CrimePing or its information, including decisions about where to live, travel or go. Our total liability for any claim relating to CrimePing will not exceed the amount you paid for the app, if any.
Some jurisdictions don’t allow certain limitations, so some of the above may not apply to you.
7. Third-party services
CrimePing relies on services run by others, including city open-data portals and Apple’s maps, geocoding and notification services. Their own terms and policies apply to them, and we aren’t responsible for their content or availability.
8. Apple
If you got CrimePing from the App Store, these terms are between you and CrimePing, not Apple. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app and is not responsible for it or for any claims relating to it. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you. Your use of the app must also follow the App Store’s usage rules.
9. Changes
We may change CrimePing, add or remove cities, or stop offering it. We may also update these terms. If we do, we’ll post the new version on this page with a new effective date. Continuing to use CrimePing after that means you accept the updated terms.
10. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.
